| POWERS OF TEN |
 |
|
| |
One of the strengths of a diverse portfolio is the cross-fertilisation of ideas between different scale of project. The programmatic and procurement challenges of a new art block and sixth form social room at
North Foreland Lodge School
were tackled in a totally different way to a much larger project such as the
Maitreya Buddha.
Private houses such as
Jubilee Place,
Porchester Square
and Peel Street allow ideas to germinate with a client which may then re-occur at much larger scales in other work.

| DIGITAL-PHYSICAL INTERFACE |
 |
|
| |
The ability to step between physical design models into 3D CAD information allows designers to be dexterous with form in ways previously unavailable. The bronze skin of the
Maitreya Buddha
was originally sculpted by hand in resin, then refined in digital form and will finally output as 15mm mechanically cast bronze plates. In order to establish the stone profile of the Maitreya Throne, A R O S used a
process of CNC cutting to build up physical models. The organic forms of individual shrines are being built as physical models and translated to a digital surface through a variety of high and low tech processes.

| BRANDING SPACE |
 |
|
| |
Commercial space exists as much in paper or web space as in physical accommodation. At
128 Southwark Street
and
30 St George Street,
A R O S has provided a totally new identity to the existing interior of the building, combined with a graphic design service to aid the developer with marketing. Another project at
100 Fenchurch Street
transformed a shabby 80s building into sleek cat2 office accommodation with ground floor A3 retail units. Past work for
Coutts Consulting Group
created a 3D entrance sequence designed around the 2D name and logo. The A R O S web site is an ongoing project that acts as a virtual window into the design processes in the studio, and links with other
consultants / artists with a view to promoting feedback.

|
| SURFACE TENSION |
 |
|
| |
One preoccupation in recent work has been to expand the boundaries of what a surface can contribute to the space it envelopes. The liquid appearance of a slumped glass feature wall at
Southwark Street
is reminiscent of the magic felt in an aquarium. A 40m x 60m cast glass curtain wall in the Maitreya cathedral uses cast glass tiles in a bespoke cladding system combined with natural and artificial lighting, to create
an element which transforms the 4000 person cathedral throughout the day and night. The circulation space of the Merit Field prayer hall uses surface by wrapping and folding it through the residual pockets
of space between primary and secondary support structures of the building, allowing a collection of awkward spaces to become a homogenous journey of discovery.

| VISUAL AID |
 |
|
| |
In demonstrating an idea to a client, A R O S step out of the box, presenting fresh ideas with a variety of media in the form of installations/displays rather than necessarily adhering to a range of standard methods of
presentation. A sketch physical model early on in a project will often play a far greater role than a final presentation model at the closing stages of a design. A R O S have presented using; fibre optics, collage, light
boxes, sketch models, 3d installations, artificial-skies, combined with the more conventional digital visualisation in stills and animation and hand drawn perspectives.
